The roof of the cavernous main auditorium on the University of Lagos (Unilag) literally came down on two Pepsi music ambassadors, the very detectable Tiwa Savage and rave of the moment Wizkid thrilled the students of the University of Lagos to a commanding performance last Thursday.
It was the grand finale of the Pepsi Music Campus Challenge, a talent hunt that traversed several university campuses in search of golden voices. At the end, ten students were selected from the auditioning that took place at the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Delta State University, Abraka, Abia State University, Uturu and Unilag.
Pepsi Music Campus Challenge was created by Pepsi the official beverage sponsor of the Nigerian Idol to give opportunity to thousands of talented youngsters who could not be accommodated within the Nigerian Idol to voice their dream. With Tiwa Savage and Wizkid already enjoying a sizzling romance with Pepsi, the Pepsi Music Campus Challenge provides yet another platform for the talented young Nigerians to voice their dream and aspire for a rewarding career in the glamorous entertainment world.
Hours before the show started, the students of Unilag had filed out stirred through the venue in their hundreds to purchase a bottle of Pepsi or any other products which will enable them gain access to the auditorium. Some were even not sure whether Tiwa Savage and Wizkid would come or it was just a gimmick by Pepsi to get them into the auditorium. But like the Pentecostals, their hope was built on faith on air international brand like Pepsi to deliver on its promise.
Even when the show began with comedy sessions, the audience was patiently waiting the arrival of Tiwa and Wizkid. They did not have to wait too long as Tiwa entered from the back stage with a rapturous welcome from the audience. She was soon followed by Wizkid. If Tiwa received a loud welcome, the excited students jumped and cheered as Wizkid nimbly sauntered into the auditorium.
The musical duo were to act as judges for the Pepsi Music Campus Challenge grand finale. With the formalities of introducing the 10 contestants over, the stage was set for the actual performance as the contestants took turns to sing two songs: first acapela and the second, a song of their choice.
It was curious that with the burgeoning music industry in Nigeria, all the contestants went for foreign repertoire. At the end three of the contestants were chosen: Aigbe Odianosen Unique (OD Unique) and Tosanwumi Ada both from Delta State University Abraka emerging first and second while Michael Obinna (Bryno), a student of Unilag who enjoy wide audience support emerged third.
The three finalist went home with N100,000 each courtesy of Pepsi. An eventual winner will be picked through voting as the music video of the three finalists will be uploaded on Youtube for voting.
The moment the students were waiting for finally came with the electric performance by Tiwa Savage and Wizkid. The students danced and cheered. Some took shots with their cell phones while others pushed their way to the front to touch their idol.
It was a Pepsi evening of fun and razzmatazz, something that will linger in the minds of the Unilag students for a long time.
For the eventual winner of the Pepsi Music Campus Challenge, he will enjoy a recording contract with Pepsi to further his music career.
